simple ideas for constructing a fuel level indicator

Enen though i know that i am supposed to check the fuel in the tank before each ride, again i manage to run out of fuel and had to push the bike to the nearest petrol station which sometimes is not near. Did anyone ever make a simple indicator and if yes is it possible to share with the rest of us. (The exersise is good but from pushing the bike so often i became like mr universe:) )
